Axel's take: 6.8/10
Choose it for Vatican access and helpful staff, not four-star polish. An older, officially 4-star sightseeing hotel near the Vatican, scored for what it is.
Grand Hotel Olympic is an older, officially 4-star hotel in Prati that makes more sense as a practical sightseeing base than a polished upscale stay. The Vatican, Ottaviano metro and plenty of restaurants are within easy walking distance. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful reception staff, daily cleaning and comfortable rooms; Tripadvisor guests also single out the staff and location.
The catch is consistency. Tripadvisor and Trip.com reviews describe tired furnishings, uneven bathroom upkeep and noise, while breakfast attracts everything from enthusiastic praise to complaints about basic quality. Recent Expedia feedback is more positive, but the overall evidence still falls short of dependable four-star comfort. We'd consider it for travelers spending most of their time exploring; light sleepers and anyone expecting refined rooms should look elsewhere.
-
Best for: Vatican-focused sightseeing; Travelers prioritizing location over polish; Short city breaks
-
Watch out for: Uneven room and bathroom condition; Street and corridor noise; Mixed breakfast feedback
-
Location: Walkable Prati base, roughly seven minutes from Ottaviano metro and close to St. Peter's Square.
-
Rooms: Air-conditioned, but furnishings, maintenance and sound insulation receive uneven feedback.
-
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia reviews favor daily housekeeping; other sites show less consistent experiences.
-
Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are the clearest recurring strength.
-
Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and buffet breakfast; confirm bar availability rather than relying on listings.
-
Fees and surprises: City tax is payable at the property; Expedia lists no on-site parking and a 10 a.m. checkout.
