Axel's take: 8.2/10

A dependable downtown base with strong housekeeping, but dated rooms and nighttime location trade-offs. a traditional 4-star business hotel in downtown Rio, scored for what it is.

Windsor Guanabara is a traditional 4-star business hotel in Centro, and we'd pick it for downtown work or cultural sightseeing rather than a beach holiday. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff; breakfast also earns plenty of compliments. The rooftop pool and views give this large, practical hotel some personality, while nearby museums, historic sights and public transport make daytime exploring straightforward.

The trade-offs are its age and immediate surroundings. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews mention dated interiors, slow elevators and noise in some rooms, so request accommodation away from lifts. Several guests find the surrounding streets uncomfortable after dark; plan on taxis or ride-hailing for evenings out. We'd skip it if you want contemporary four-star polish, beach access or a neighborhood suited to relaxed nighttime wandering.

• Best for: business travelers working in Centro; museum and historic-center sightseeing; travelers prioritizing cleanliness over modern decor

• Watch out for: surrounding streets feel uncomfortable to some guests after dark; dated interiors and slow elevators; street or elevator noise in some rooms

• Location: Convenient for Centro's cultural sights and transport, but not a beach base; guests recommend rides after dark.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable but traditional and unevenly dated; standard rooms face inward, and some guests report noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Mostly praised as helpful and professional, although occasional negative experiences interrupt the strong overall picture.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool, gym, sauna, restaurant, breakfast buffet and extensive conference facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra and is subject to availability; the official site warns its virtual-tour images are outdated.
