#6 of 7 hotels in Botafogo by Axel's take. Botafogo is #3 of 6 places to stay in Rio de Janeiro. The best hotels in Botafogo, ranked · Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Axel's take: 7.1/10

A handy Botafogo base, but room condition is the gamble. a simple budget hotel in Botafogo, scored for what it is.

Plaza Spania is a simple budget hotel in Botafogo, not the polished boutique stay its booking name might suggest. Its strongest selling point is convenience: the metro, Botafogo Praia Shopping and places to eat are close by. Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the helpful staff and breakfast. We'd consider it for a short, location-first stay rather than spending much time in the room.

The trade-off is inconsistent room quality. Despite broadly positive overall ratings, Tripadvisor and Google guest reports include recurring musty or mold-like smells, and some rooms have windows facing internal corridors rather than outside. There are also scattered reports of confirmed bookings not being honored. Ask specifically for an exterior-facing room and reconfirm before arrival. We'd skip it if damp smells or unreliable arrival arrangements would derail the trip.

  • Best for: budget-minded city explorers; short stays near Botafogo metro

  • Watch out for: recurring musty-room reports; some rooms lack exterior windows; reports of last-minute booking problems

  • Location: Close to Botafogo Praia Shopping, restaurants and the metro; its clearest strength.

  • Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; size, ventilation and condition vary.

  • Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but repeated damp-smell complaints deserve attention.

  • Service: Helpful reception staff earn praise, though booking and problem handling draw some serious complaints.

  • Amenities: Wi-Fi, minibars, breakfast and 24-hour reception; accessibility listings conflict, so confirm directly.

  • Fees and surprises: No onsite parking; breakfast may cost extra unless included in your booking.
