Axel's take: 7.9/10

A convenient family base with spacious rooms, but dated touches and restricted pool hours. a family-friendly 4-star just outside Old Québec’s walls, scored for what it is.

Palace Royal is a family-friendly 4-star beside Saint-Jean Gate, strongest as a practical base for exploring Old Québec rather than a luxury stay. We'd pick it for the walkable location, spacious rooms and palm-filled indoor pool atrium. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds and helpful staff; balconies overlooking the courtyard add character, especially during weekend live music.

The trade-offs are dated décor and bathrooms, plus uneven housekeeping and service reports on Tripadvisor, although Expedia’s recent feedback is largely positive. More importantly for families, the hotel currently lists evening-only pool and hot-tub access Sunday through Friday, with longer Saturday hours, subject to lifeguard availability. Parking and breakfast cost extra, and the garage has tight spaces. We'd skip it for polished luxury or dependable daytime swimming; light sleepers should request a room away from the musical atrium.

• Best for: families exploring Old Québec; travelers prioritizing walkability; guests who enjoy a lively indoor courtyard

• Watch out for: restricted pool and hot-tub hours; dated décor and uneven housekeeping reports; paid parking in a tight garage

• Location: Just outside Saint-Jean Gate, convenient for Old Québec, restaurants and the convention center.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, but décor and some bathrooms show their age.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive recent Expedia feedback; Tripadvisor includes repeated housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though problem handling is not consistently polished.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, hot tub, gym, sauna and steakhouse; pool access is currently heavily restricted.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and breakfast are extra; garage spaces cannot be reserved, and no valet is offered.
