#7 of 9 hotels in Old Quebec Upper Town by Axel's take. Old Quebec Upper Town is #1 of 6 places to stay in Quebec City. The best hotels in Old Quebec Upper Town, ranked · Where to stay in Quebec City

Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong Old Québec base, with welcoming staff and a few old-building compromises. A small, independent 3-star hotel in the heart of Old Québec, scored for what it is.

Hôtel Champlain is a small, independent 3-star that gets the sightseeing essentials right: a central Old Québec address, comfortable rooms and generally warm service. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and easy walks to the sights. We'd pick it for a city break where location matters more than polished interiors. Complimentary round-the-clock lobby coffee and a wine dispenser make the shared spaces useful, too.

The compromises are practical: some furnishings and bathroom fittings look tired, breakfast divides opinion, and recent guests say housekeeping must be requested. Paid parking is limited and tight; confirm a space directly, especially with a large vehicle. The hotel also confirms that its old-house rooms require stairs. We'd skip it if you want uniformly modern rooms or guaranteed step-free access without checking your room assignment.

  • Best for: Couples exploring Old Québec; First-time visitors sightseeing on foot; Travelers who favor location over luxury

  • Watch out for: Limited, tight parking requiring advance confirmation; Housekeeping reported as request-only; Stairs-only access to old-house rooms

  • Location: Central within the old walls, with major sights and restaurants readily walkable; expect hills.

  • Rooms: Generally comfortable, with many spacious options, but some guests report dated furnishings and bathroom fittings.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback; Booking.com scores cleanliness 8.9/10, despite occasional complaints about worn carpets.

  • Service: Recent reviews overwhelmingly praise helpful staff; request housekeeping rather than assuming daily service.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour lobby coffee, a self-service wine bar and buffet breakfast; elevator access excludes old-house rooms.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking and pets cost extra; breakfast is included with direct reservations, but check inclusion on other bookings.
