Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong choice for quiet beach time, with polished rooms and expensive extras. an upscale, non-all-inclusive beachfront resort, scored for what it is.

The Westin Puntacana is an upscale, non-all-inclusive beachfront resort that suits travelers who prefer a relaxed base to nonstop entertainment. We'd pick it for spacious balcony rooms, well-kept grounds and easy airport access. Recent Expedia and Reddit guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and friendly staff, while the pool and access to the wider resort's golf courses give it appeal beyond the beach.

The trade-off is paying separately for much of the experience. Food and drinks draw recurring price complaints, Expedia lists a nightly resort fee, and some guests report limited restaurant opening days. Seasonal seaweed can also compromise swimming despite beach cleaning. Marriott advertises a kids club, but recent guests describe little organized entertainment. We'd skip it for an activity-packed family holiday or an all-inclusive budget you want settled upfront.

• Best for: couples seeking a quieter resort; golf-focused getaways; beach breaks near the airport

• Watch out for: resort fee and costly dining; seasonal seaweed affecting swimming; limited entertainment and variable restaurant schedules

• Location: Beachfront at Playa Blanca, close to the airport but removed from independent dining.

• Rooms: Spacious balcony rooms earn praise for comfort, views and effective air conditioning.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Reddit reports, including rooms and grounds.

• Service: Friendly staff receive strong praise overall; occasional front-desk problem-solving complaints remain.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gym and advertised kids club; golf and spa facilities are within the wider resort.

• Fees and surprises: Not all-inclusive; Expedia lists a nightly resort fee, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.
