Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong couples’ retreat for poolside relaxation, less convincing for beach-first luxury. a five-star, adults-only all-inclusive resort in gated Cap Cana, scored for what it is.

Sanctuary Cap Cana is a five-star, adults-only all-inclusive with Spanish castle-style architecture and a relaxed, couples-focused atmosphere. We'd pick it for a romantic break built around pools, spacious suites and attentive staff rather than nonstop entertainment. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the service and well-kept grounds; cleanliness earns strong overall marks, although some guests report room wear. It's a very good resort, but not consistently flawless luxury.

The biggest compromise is the small beach: recent guests across several sites describe sargassum sometimes making swimming unpleasant or impractical. Dining draws plenty of praise, but restaurant service and food quality are less consistent, and opening rotations can narrow your choices. Sanctuary Town dining now costs extra, as Marriott confirms. We'd skip it if a broad, reliably swimmable beach, lively nightlife or an entirely extras-free stay tops your list.

• Best for: couples seeking a quiet escape; honeymoons and anniversaries; pool-first vacationers

• Watch out for: small beach with recurring sargassum disruption; uneven dining and rotating restaurant openings; Sanctuary Town and premium experiences cost extra

• Location: Gated Cap Cana, roughly 15 minutes from Punta Cana airport; Marriott says no hotel shuttle is provided.

• Rooms: Spacious suites attract praise, though some guests flag wear; Castle rooms can mean longer walks to central facilities.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest ratings outweigh scattered reports of dampness and maintenance shortcomings.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring strength; restaurant service can be slower and less consistent.

• Amenities: Multiple pools, five main restaurants, a gym and spa; evening entertainment is relatively restrained.

• Fees and surprises: Sanctuary Town is generally outside the package; spa treatments, cabanas and premium dining also carry extra charges.
