Axel's take: 7.9/10

A good family beach base, but dining and service lack consistency. a family-focused beachfront all-inclusive, more mid-range than luxury, scored for what it is.

Iberostar Waves Dominicana is a family-focused beachfront all-inclusive that makes more sense as a comfortable mid-range resort than the five-star experience Iberostar advertises. We'd shortlist it for its tropical gardens, pools, kids' activities and easy beach access. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and well-kept grounds, while Booking.com also rates cleanliness strongly. It's a good fit for families who want plenty to do without leaving the resort.

The compromises are recurring rather than universal: recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews describe uneven food, disappointing drinks and restaurant service that ranges from warm to overstretched. Rooms are spacious but some guests find them dated, with occasional maintenance problems. Seaweed has also disrupted swimming during several recent stays despite cleanup efforts. We'd skip it for a food-led holiday or polished luxury; choose it for an active, straightforward family break.

• Best for: families wanting activities on site; beach-and-pool vacationers; travelers comfortable with mid-range all-inclusives

• Watch out for: uneven food, drinks and restaurant service; dated rooms and occasional maintenance issues; seaweed can affect beach swimming

• Location: Direct beach access on the Arena Gorda stretch, within Iberostar's larger resort complex.

• Rooms: Spacious balcony rooms; recent guests still report dated fittings and occasional maintenance faults.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across major sites, especially rooms and grounds, despite isolated misses.

• Service: Many guests praise friendly staff, but restaurant attentiveness and problem handling vary.

• Amenities: Pools, Star Camp kids' activities, gym, tennis and entertainment; spa and golf are also available.

• Fees and surprises: All-inclusive does not cover everything: diving, medical care and babysitting carry extra charges; club-sales approaches are reported.
