Axel's take: 7.9/10

A good beach-and-pool all-inclusive, but the Palace name promises more polish than it delivers. A large, upscale beachfront all-inclusive for families, with lively entertainment rather than true luxury, scored for what it is.

Riu Palace Punta Cana is a large, upscale family all-inclusive on Arena Gorda beach, best approached as a fun resort rather than a luxury retreat. We'd pick it for the beachfront setting, extensive activities and easy all-inclusive routine. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff, while three pools, children's facilities and Splash Water World access give families plenty to do.

The compromise is consistency. Despite RIU's documented 2018 refurbishment, recent Tripadvisor guests and a detailed Reddit report describe dated rooms and maintenance niggles. Food earns plenty of praise but also recurring complaints about uneven quality; housekeeping feedback is mostly positive, not uniformly so. The swim-up pool and entertainment can be lively. It's a good fit for sociable families and groups; we'd skip it for a quiet romantic escape, reliably refined dining or polished five-star service.

• Best for: Families who want pools and activities; Groups seeking lively all-inclusive fun; Beach-focused vacationers

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and uneven maintenance; Variable food quality; Lively swim-up pool atmosphere

• Location: Directly on Arena Gorda beach, with the beach setting among its most consistently praised features.

• Rooms: Spacious rooms with sitting areas; recurring reports of dated fittings and occasional plumbing or air-conditioning problems.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised on Expedia, though Tripadvisor reports show occasional housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly restaurant and bar staff are a strength; request handling and housekeeping follow-through are less consistent.

• Amenities: Three outdoor pools, a children's pool, kids' activities, themed restaurants and Splash Water World access.

• Fees and surprises: Babysitting costs extra; the documented major refurbishment dates to 2018, not a recent makeover.
