Axel's take: 8.6/10

Strong Old Town character and comfort, but choose your room carefully. A historic five-star boutique hotel in Prague’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Iron Gate is a historic five-star boutique hotel steps from Old Town Square, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer period character to contemporary polish. Individually arranged rooms and suites are the draw, with painted ceilings in selected suites. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the spacious accommodation, cleanliness, breakfast and Deer restaurant. We'd choose it for a romantic sightseeing break rather than a full-service luxury retreat.

Room choice matters: several guests report street or restaurant noise on the ground floor, and some rooms offer limited natural light. Request an upper-floor room and confirm its layout before booking. Service earns mostly warm reviews, though front-desk helpfulness is not uniformly five-star. Check the final bill: multiple guests report an automatically added, removable service charge. We'd skip it if guaranteed quiet and consistent luxury service are essential.

• Best for: Couples who enjoy historic interiors; First-time Prague sightseers; Travelers wanting spacious suites

• Watch out for: Ground-floor street and restaurant noise; Room layouts and natural light vary; Reported optional service charge on checkout bills

• Location: Steps from Old Town Square; pedestrian-zone access means coordinating car arrivals with reception.

• Rooms: Individual layouts and generous suites; confirm floor, windows and any historic ceiling features.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Usually praised as helpful, with some recent exceptions at the front desk.

• Amenities: Deer restaurant, bar, courtyard, room service and concierge; dining is a particular strength.

• Fees and surprises: City tax applies; check breakfast inclusion, parking arrangements and any removable service charge.
