Hotels in Portland, Oregona historic luxury boutique hotel in downtown Portland
8.3/10
Historic character and warm service outweigh some wear and downtown noise.
Sentinel is a historic luxury boutique hotel whose strongest assets are character, location and welcoming staff. We'd choose it for a Portland weekend built around restaurants, shops and downtown exploring. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable rooms, cleanliness and helpful service. Jake's Grill and the wine lounge make staying in appealing, while select terrace rooms add something genuinely special.
The reservation is about polish: worn or peeling furniture crops up across reviews, and street and rail noise can interrupt sleep. Expedia guests also reported nearby construction disturbing early mornings in June 2026; check whether that work affects your dates. A mandatory daily amenities fee and separately charged valet parking add friction. It's a strong pick for atmosphere, but we'd skip it if you want flawless contemporary luxury or reliably quiet nights.

Best for: couples who like historic hotels; car-free downtown exploring; food and wine weekends
Watch out for: street and rail noise; recent construction reports; worn furniture in some rooms; mandatory amenities fee and paid valet
Location: Walkable downtown base near Powell's, restaurants and transit; city noise is the trade-off.
Rooms: Comfortable, distinctive rooms; select categories have terraces or fireplaces, but furniture wear recurs in reviews.
Cleanliness: Mostly strong recent feedback, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a dominant cleanliness problem.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across recent guest reviews.
Amenities: Jake's Grill, wine lounge, nightlife, bike loans and a 24-hour gym; executive lounge access depends on room category.
Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily amenities fee; valet and pets cost extra. Confirm nearby construction before booking.
