#3 of 3 hotels in Grover Beach by Axel's take. Grover Beach is #3 of 6 places to stay in Pismo Beach. The best hotels in Grover Beach, ranked · Where to stay in Pismo Beach

Axel's take: 7.2/10

A reasonable budget beach base, with better recent feedback than its older reputation suggests. a no-frills 2-star motel in Grover Beach, scored for what it is.

American Inn is a no-frills 2-star motel in Grover Beach, not a beachfront hotel in Pismo. We'd consider it for a short, budget-minded coastal stop: recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff, while a 2026 Tripadvisor reviewer also found it better than older reviews suggested. Free parking and rooms with microwaves and refrigerators make the basics practical.

The catch is consistency. Google and Tripadvisor's overall ratings remain substantially weaker than Expedia and Booking.com's, and guests have reported thin walls, noisy or temperamental air conditioning, and occasional equipment problems. One recent Expedia guest couldn't work reliably on the room's Wi-Fi. It's a reasonable place to sleep between beach outings, but we'd skip it for a quiet retreat or a work-heavy stay.

Best for: budget-minded coastal road trips; short beach visits; travelers prioritizing free parking
Watch out for: thin walls and possible equipment noise; Wi-Fi may not suit remote work; not beachfront or in central Pismo Beach
Location: In Grover Beach near restaurants and the station; beach access is a walk or short drive away.
Rooms: Basic rooms with microwaves and refrigerators; comfort gets praise, but equipment reliability varies.
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is predominantly positive, despite much weaker historical Tripadvisor scores.
Service: Recent guests frequently praise friendly, helpful staff, including assistance with room problems.
Amenities: Free parking and Wi-Fi; breakfast is not reliably confirmed, so don't count on it.
Fees and surprises: Dogs require advance notice and an extra charge; confirm arrival times because published check-in policies differ.
