Axel's take: 7.8/10

A good self-catering base for Paris, provided you can overlook dated rooms. a practical 3-star aparthotel near Bastille and the Marais, scored for what it is.

Citadines Bastille Marais is a practical 3-star aparthotel whose strongest assets are space, kitchenettes and location. We'd consider it a good pick for families or longer stays: studios start at 25 square metres, and nearby supermarkets make self-catering easy. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful reception staff, comfortable beds and convenient metro access, with Bastille and the Marais within walking distance.

The compromise is condition rather than convenience. Dated furnishings recur across reviews, alongside less consistent reports about cleaning and maintenance; air-conditioning feedback is mixed. The hotel lists weekly housekeeping, so don't expect daily hotel-style servicing. Breakfast and parking cost extra. We'd choose it for practical independence, not polished interiors, and skip it if daily cleaning or dependable summer cooling is essential.

• Best for: families wanting apartment space; longer self-catering stays; travelers exploring eastern central Paris

• Watch out for: dated furnishings and uneven maintenance; weekly rather than daily housekeeping; mixed air-conditioning feedback

• Location: Near Bréguet-Sabin and Richard-Lenoir metro stations, with markets, groceries and restaurants close by.

• Rooms: Studios are 25 square metres; one-bedroom apartments are 40, with useful kitchens but dated interiors.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive overall ratings, tempered by some recent complaints about dust and cleaning thoroughness.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are a recurring strength; handling of maintenance problems is less consistent.

• Amenities: Kitchenettes, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and 24-hour reception suit independent stays.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, parking and pets incur extra charges; weekly housekeeping is the advertised standard.
