Axel's take: 8.4/10

Choose Triada for character, welcoming staff and downtown access, rather than flawless resort polish. a historic, Spanish-style 4-star boutique hotel near downtown, scored for what it is.

Triada is a historic, Spanish-style 4-star boutique hotel in the Movie Colony district, and we'd choose it for a relaxed couples' break near downtown. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and walkable restaurant access. Two outdoor pools, a hot tub and poolside dining give this small property enough for an easy afternoon in; casitas with full kitchens are useful for longer stays.

The trade-off is that character doesn't mean everything feels freshly finished. Some recent guests flag aging pool surfaces and uneven bathroom layouts, despite Marriott describing the rooms as renovated. There are no elevators, so request a ground-floor room if stairs are difficult. Valet parking costs extra. We'd skip it if you want immaculate luxury finishes or a large, full-service resort.

• Best for: couples on a relaxed getaway; travelers who like walking to restaurants; longer stays in kitchen-equipped casitas

• Watch out for: no elevators; some pool-area wear; paid valet parking

• Location: Movie Colony setting within walking distance of downtown dining and shopping.

• Rooms: Distinctive rooms and kitchen-equipped casitas; some guests find bathroom layouts awkward.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in guest feedback, including recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring highlight across review sources.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, hot tub, fitness center and Iluminara restaurant; not a sprawling resort.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking, standard breakfast and pets carry extra charges; upper floors require stairs.
