Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong downtown choice for design and dining, less convincing for uninterrupted quiet. a design-forward, upscale 4-star hotel in downtown Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

Thompson Palm Springs is an upscale 4-star hotel that makes a strong case for staying downtown rather than retreating to a sprawling resort. We'd pick it for walkable restaurants and shops, thoughtfully designed rooms, and a sociable pool scene. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff; Lola Rose also earns consistent compliments.

The main compromise is quiet: traffic noise recurs across review sites, and pool-facing rooms can feel lively rather than restful. Request a courtyard-facing room if sleep matters most. Upper Stories adds a separate 21-plus pool, but guests disagree about whether its extras justify the premium. A daily resort fee and separately charged valet parking also deserve attention. We'd skip it for a secluded desert escape or uniformly polished luxury service.

• Best for: couples who want downtown on foot; design-minded travelers; social pool-and-dining weekends

• Watch out for: traffic noise and lively pool-facing rooms; resort fee plus separate valet charges; mixed feedback on Upper Stories extras

• Location: Central Palm Canyon Drive location makes downtown restaurants, shops and galleries easy to reach on foot.

• Rooms: Stylish, comfortable rooms draw strong praise; courtyard-facing options are a better bet for quiet.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across major booking sites and recent guest feedback.

• Service: Staff are widely praised, though some guests report uneven pool service and problem handling.

• Amenities: Two elevated pools, including the Upper Stories 21-plus pool, plus a gym, dining and guest bicycles.

• Fees and surprises: A daily resort fee applies, valet parking costs extra, and Upper Stories pool access is restricted.
