Axel's take: 9.2/10

Retro character, spotless rooms and thoughtful extras make this small hotel stand out. a small, adults-only retro boutique hotel with motel-style rooms, scored for what it is.

The Stardust is a small, adults-only boutique hotel with motel-style rooms, and we'd choose it over a basic chain for personality and personal attention. Reopened after restoration in January 2025, it earns unusually consistent praise across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews for spotless rooms, comfortable beds and responsive owners. The pool, colorful interiors and communal kitchen and lounge—with complimentary snacks and drinks—give it more character than its simple footprint suggests.

The trade-offs are practical rather than signs of poor upkeep: check-in is self-service, there's no traditional front desk, and upstairs rooms require stairs. Restaurants and bars are walkable, but central downtown is a short drive away. The hotel also prioritizes whole-property group bookings, so individual-room availability varies. It's a strong pick for couples or friends; we'd skip it for full-service resort facilities or a downtown doorstep.

  • Best for: couples who like retro design; friends planning a whole-hotel getaway; independent travelers happy with self-check-in

  • Watch out for: no traditional front desk; stairs to upper-floor rooms; individual bookings depend on group-event availability

  • Location: South Palm Springs, near several restaurants and bars; central downtown is a short drive.

  • Rooms: Individually decorated retro rooms; guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds and well-appointed bathrooms.

  • Cleanliness: A standout strength across recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

  • Service: Owners earn strong praise for responsiveness; arrival is self-service rather than front-desk-led.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, shared kitchen and lounge, complimentary refreshments, Wi-Fi and barbecue facilities.

  • Fees and surprises: Free parking; the hotel says no resort fees. Expedia lists a deposit and housekeeping on request.
