Axel's take: 8.6/10

Retro character, standout staff and a pool worth planning downtime around. a mid-century, motel-style boutique hotel in Uptown Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

The Skylark is a 28-room, mid-century, motel-style boutique hotel, not a full-service luxury resort. It's a strong pick for a relaxed Palm Springs break: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and genuinely helpful staff. The heated pool, hot tub and mountain backdrop are the main attraction, with breakfast, loaner bikes and Lost Property restaurant adding substance to the retro styling.

The trade-offs are mostly practical. Downtown's main restaurant-and-shopping core is a drive or a longer walk away, and some guests mention noise or bathroom quirks. The hotel distinguishes renovated Deluxe rooms from Vintage Modern categories; we'd favor Deluxe for updated bathrooms. Breakfast earns plenty of praise, though some find the selection repetitive. Factor in the mandatory resort fee and damage deposit. We'd skip it if you want polished luxury or downtown immediately outside.

  • Best for: couples seeking a relaxed pool break; mid-century design fans; travelers who prefer small hotels

  • Watch out for: mandatory resort fee and damage deposit; room categories differ in bathroom updates; downtown core is a longer walk

  • Location: Uptown Design District; nearby dining, but the downtown core is not immediately outside.

  • Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable; Deluxe categories have renovated bathrooms, and occasional noise is reported.

  • Cleanliness: Consistent recent praise across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com.

  • Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring strength in guest reviews.

  • Amenities: Heated outdoor pool, hot tub, included breakfast, bikes and Lost Property restaurant/bar.

  • Fees and surprises: Booking sites list a mandatory nightly resort fee; a damage deposit is required, and there is no elevator.
