Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong couples’ pick for poolside relaxation, with occasional service lapses. a historic, adults-only luxury boutique hotel near downtown Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

The Colony Palms is a historic, adults-only luxury boutique hotel whose appeal is intimate rather than grand: leafy grounds, richly decorated rooms and a pool that anchors the stay. We'd pick it for a relaxed couples’ break within walking distance of downtown restaurants. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the gardens, comfortable rooms, poolside atmosphere and Colony Club restaurant; cleanliness also scores strongly on Expedia and Booking.com.

The qualification is service consistency. Many guests describe attentive staff, but complaints about slow check-in and uneven restaurant or pool service recur across sites—noticeable shortcomings at this level. Some rooms have limited daylight, so request a brighter room if that matters. A nightly resort fee and paid valet parking add friction. We'd skip it if you want extensive resort facilities or reliably seamless luxury service.

• Best for: couples seeking an adults-only break; poolside lounging and dining; travelers who prefer boutique character

• Watch out for: occasionally slow or uneven service; limited daylight in some rooms; resort fee and paid valet parking

• Location: Walkable to downtown dining and shops, though the property borders a main road.

• Rooms: Distinctively decorated, with Frette linens and Le Labo toiletries; daylight varies by room.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength, supported by high cleanliness ratings on Expedia and Booking.com.

• Service: Usually praised warmly, but recent reviews on multiple sites report occasional delays and inattentiveness.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, hot tub, treatment spa and Colony Club restaurant; better for lounging than extensive resort activities.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly resort fee, charged valet parking and pet fees; the hotel is adults-only.
