Axel's take: 8.2/10

A friendly, low-key Palm Springs base, with more character than polish. A small, adults-only 3-star boutique hotel near downtown Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

Movie Colony is a small, adults-only 3-star boutique hotel, and we'd pick it for relaxed pool days and walkable access to Palm Springs restaurants—not luxury. Its historic modernist design gives it character, while Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds and intimate atmosphere. The heated pool, hot tub, continental breakfast and wine-and-cheese gathering make it an appealing short-break base.

The trade-off is uneven polish: some guests report worn furnishings, noisy air-conditioning and sound carrying from the road or neighboring rooms, although overall cleanliness feedback remains positive. Ask for a room away from Indian Canyon Drive if you're noise-sensitive. A nightly resort fee covers parking and Wi-Fi, and there's no restaurant or gym. It's a strong pick for easygoing couples; we'd skip it for full-service resort expectations or guaranteed quiet.

• Best for: Couples on a relaxed getaway; Fans of historic modernist design; Travelers who want walkable dining

• Watch out for: Road noise and uneven soundproofing; Some worn furnishings and noisy air-conditioning; Nightly resort fee

• Location: Convenient for Uptown dining and walking downtown; street-facing rooms can hear traffic.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and some generous terraces; condition and soundproofing vary.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised across guest sites, with scattered housekeeping complaints rather than a dominant pattern.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring highlight; confirm arrival arrangements outside reception hours.

• Amenities: Heated pool, hot tub, continental breakfast and wine-and-cheese gathering; no restaurant or gym.

• Fees and surprises: A nightly resort fee includes parking and Wi-Fi; dogs incur an additional fee.
