Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong couples’ retreat with private patios and downtown on the doorstep. An upscale, adults-only boutique hotel with 18 villas in downtown Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

La Serena Villas is an upscale, 21-and-over boutique hotel rather than a conventional three-star. Its 18 villas, private patios, outdoor soaking tubs and fire pits make it a strong pick for a romantic downtown break. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests broadly agree on the appeal: comfortable rooms, attractive grounds and welcoming staff, with restaurants and shops within walking distance. Azúcar’s restaurant and rooftop bar, the pool and on-site spa give you reasons to stay put.

The caveat is consistency at upscale expectations. Some recent guests describe minor maintenance faults or uneven housekeeping, although cleanliness feedback remains overwhelmingly positive. Tripadvisor guests also flag limited unreserved pool seating. A mandatory daily resort fee covers breakfast, parking, bikes and Wi-Fi. We’d choose it for a relaxed couples’ getaway, but skip it if you want extensive resort facilities or dislike bundled fees.

• Best for: Couples celebrating an occasion; Adults wanting a walkable downtown base; Travelers who value private outdoor space

• Watch out for: Mandatory daily resort fee; Limited unreserved pool seating; Occasional upkeep and housekeeping lapses

• Location: Downtown restaurants and shops are walkable; Booking.com guests rate the location especially highly.

• Rooms: Private patios, soaking tubs and fire pits distinguish the villas; entry-level King Villas are 300 square feet.

• Cleanliness: Strong ratings across booking sites, tempered by a minority of recent housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn frequent praise, though some guests report uneven attention.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, Spa Serena, Azúcar restaurant and rooftop bar; breakfast and bikes are covered by the resort fee.

• Fees and surprises: Daily resort fee bundles several basics; some pool daybeds cost extra, and all overnight guests must be 21 or older.
