#4 of 9 hotels in South Palm Canyon by Axel's take. South Palm Canyon is #4 of 5 places to stay in Palm Springs. The best hotels in South Palm Canyon, ranked · Where to stay in Palm Springs

Axel's take: 7.8/10

Come for the pool and tiki character, but expect uneven room condition. A budget tiki-themed motor lodge in south Palm Springs, scored for what it is.

Caliente Tropics is a budget motor lodge with genuine tiki character, not a full-service resort. It's a good pick for travelers who'd rather spend the day around a large heated pool and hot tub than pay for polished interiors. The Reef bar adds a reason to stay on-site, and recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff, pool atmosphere and value. Free parking helps, too.

The trade-off is inconsistent room condition. Plenty of guests report clean, comfortable stays, but worn furnishings, tired carpets and housekeeping misses recur across sites; some bathrooms are also cramped. Noise between rooms can be an issue. We'd choose it for an easygoing, pool-centered break with a car, rather than downtown walkability. Skip it if spotless finishes, reliable quiet or a freshly renovated room are priorities.

  • Best for: Tiki enthusiasts on a budget; Pool-centered getaways; Road-trippers with a car

  • Watch out for: Uneven room upkeep and cleaning; Noise between rooms; Outside the downtown core

  • Location: South Palm Springs, near Moorten Botanical Garden and several restaurants; a drive or longer walk downtown.

  • Rooms: Basic rooms with refrigerators and air-conditioning; dated finishes, small bathrooms and noise draw recurring complaints.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive overall ratings, but recent guests across several sites still report cleaning misses.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent strengths in recent reviews.

  • Amenities: Large heated outdoor pool, hot tub, The Reef bar and restaurant, plus a gym.

  • Fees and surprises: Free self-parking; Expedia lists a stay deposit and pet charges. No elevators.
