Axel's take: 7.8/10

Pick Ace for poolside sociability, not a hushed four-star escape. A retro, motel-style 4-star built around a lively swim club, scored for what it is.

Ace is a retro, motel-style 4-star whose strongest selling point is its social pool scene rather than polished luxury. We'd pick it for a friends' getaway: weekend DJs, two pools and King's Highway diner give you reasons to stay put. The hotel advertises refreshed rooms, while recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, friendly staff and the atmosphere.

The trade-off is that the party can dominate the stay. Recent guests flag noise, busy pools and expensive food and drinks; some still describe worn rooms despite the refresh. There's a resort fee and paid parking, and the quieter Commune Pool can close for private events. We'd skip it for guaranteed tranquility or consistently refined four-star comfort. It's a good fit when the swim club is the reason you're booking.

• Best for: Friends on a social pool getaway; Couples who enjoy DJs and retro design

• Watch out for: Pool music and weekend crowds; Resort fee, paid parking and pricey drinks; Commune Pool access can change for private events

• Location: South of downtown; better suited to biking or driving into the center than doorstep downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Recently refreshed, with comfortable beds frequently praised; some guests still report wear and maintenance shortcomings.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive rather than flawless: Expedia and Booking.com cleanliness scores sit above eight out of ten.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength in recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: Two pools, gym, appointment-only spa and dining; the main pool is officially adults 18+ and Commune is family-friendly.

• Fees and surprises: Additional resort fee, parking and pet charges; Commune Pool may be unavailable during private events.
