Axel's take: 8.1/10

A stylish downtown base with welcoming staff, but genuinely tiny rooms. a design-led mid-range boutique hotel with very compact rooms in Lower Manhattan, scored for what it is.

Walker Hotel Tribeca is a design-led boutique hotel in a former ribbon factory, best treated as a comfortable downtown base rather than a full luxury stay. We'd pick it for exploring SoHo, Chinatown and Tribeca, with Canal Street subway connections close by. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness. The atmospheric lounges, dining options and seasonal rooftop give it more personality than a standard mid-range hotel.

The biggest compromise is space: the smallest rooms are just 135 square feet, and guests regularly describe awkward luggage storage. Street noise affects some rooms, although others earn praise for quiet. There's also a daily facility fee, and breakfast isn't automatically included. It's a strong pick for solo travelers and light-packing couples; we'd skip it for families or anyone wanting room to spread out.

• Best for: Solo travelers exploring downtown; Light-packing couples; Travelers who value design and neighborhood dining

• Watch out for: Very small rooms and limited luggage space; Street noise in some rooms; Daily facility fee; breakfast not automatically included

• Location: Convenient for SoHo, Chinatown and Tribeca, with Canal Street subway stations nearby.

• Rooms: Stylish and compact; entry rooms start at 135 square feet, so compare room categories carefully.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest feedback, despite some individual reports of wear and cleaning lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

• Amenities: On-site dining, café, live-music cocktail bar, seasonal rooftop and a 24-hour fitness center.

• Fees and surprises: Daily facility fee; breakfast generally extra; no connecting rooms or rollaway beds.
