Axel's take: 8.6/10

A dependable Midtown base with attentive service, quiet rooms and somewhat dated interiors. a traditional Japanese-influenced upscale hotel on Park Avenue, scored for what it is.

The Kitano is a traditional upscale hotel in Murray Hill, a short walk from Grand Central. It’s a strong pick for travelers who prefer calm, helpful service and practical comfort over fashionable design. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, courteous staff and quiet rooms; Tripadvisor broadly backs that picture. Standard rooms offer a useful 305 square feet, while deep tubs and Toto washlets give the stay a distinctly Japanese touch.

The trade-off is age: recurring feedback describes dated decor and bathrooms, rather than a uniformly fresh luxury experience. There’s also a mandatory nightly destination fee. Roof at 66 Park adds skyline views, but the hotel lists Tuesday–Saturday opening, so don’t count on Sunday or Monday cocktails. We’d skip it if contemporary interiors or a lively, always-available hotel bar are priorities.

• Best for: business travelers using Grand Central; couples seeking a quieter Midtown base; travelers who value Japanese-style comforts

• Watch out for: dated decor and bathrooms; mandatory nightly destination fee; rooftop bar closed Sundays and Mondays

• Location: Park Avenue at East 38th Street, roughly five minutes’ walk from Grand Central.

• Rooms: Standard rooms measure 305 square feet; guests generally praise quietness, but interiors show their age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Trip.com reviews.

• Service: Repeated praise for courteous, attentive staff and responsive housekeeping.

• Amenities: Japanese dining, breakfast and a skyline rooftop bar; rooftop hours are Tuesday–Saturday evenings.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a mandatory destination fee, an incidental card hold, and extra charges for breakfast and valet parking.
