Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical Chelsea base with great views, but frustrating elevator waits. a modern, select-service mid-range high-rise in Chelsea, scored for what it is.

Hyatt Place New York / Chelsea is a modern, select-service high-rise, not a full-service luxury hotel. It’s a good pick for travelers who spend their days exploring: subway access is handy, breakfast is included, and selected rooms deliver impressive skyline views. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and friendly staff. We'd choose it for the location and useful basics rather than a hotel-centered stay.

The recurring drawback is elevator congestion, especially around breakfast; guests still report lengthy waits. Breakfast itself earns plenty of praise, but the dining area can feel crowded and hectic. Rooms are often tight, particularly with several people and luggage. We'd skip it if spacious accommodation, calm mornings or reliably quick trips downstairs matter more than views and convenience.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing trips; travelers wanting breakfast included; skyline-view seekers

• Watch out for: long elevator waits at peak times; crowded breakfast periods; compact rooms with limited luggage space

• Location: Walkable Chelsea setting near 23rd Street subway stations, restaurants and Penn Station.

• Rooms: Modern and comfortable but often compact; skyline views depend on the room category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, with strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive frequent praise, though occasional check-in problems appear.

• Amenities: Included breakfast and Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, terrace bar and casual dining.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is off-site and paid, without in-and-out privileges; pet fees apply.
