Axel's take: 6.9/10

A handy Midtown base, but tired rooms weaken its four-star appeal. An aging 4-star boutique hotel in Midtown, scored for what it is.

City Club Hotel is an aging four-star boutique whose main selling point is its Midtown location, close to Bryant Park, Broadway and Times Square. We'd consider it for a sightseeing-heavy trip, not a polished hotel experience. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, and many report clean rooms and comfortable beds, though room sizes vary considerably.

The recurring drawback is condition: worn wallpaper, stained furnishings and unreliable bathroom fittings appear across reviews, alongside less consistent housekeeping. Breakfast is a light continental spread, not a substantial meal. The hotel's FAQ says db Bistro Moderne remains closed, and gym access is off-site. Factor in a mandatory nightly facility fee and an incidental card hold. We'd skip it if dependable four-star upkeep, quiet air-conditioning or a generous breakfast matters more than location.

• Best for: Sightseeing-heavy Midtown trips; Broadway visitors prioritizing location

• Watch out for: Recurring room wear and maintenance complaints; Very limited continental breakfast; Mandatory nightly facility fee and card hold

• Location: Convenient for Bryant Park, Times Square, Broadway and subway connections.

• Rooms: Sizes vary widely; guests often like the beds, but worn finishes and noisy air-conditioning recur.

• Cleanliness: Many recent guests report clean rooms, but staining and housekeeping lapses remain recurring concerns.

• Service: Helpful front-desk staff earn frequent praise; complaint handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Light continental breakfast; off-site gym passes; the hotel says db Bistro Moderne remains closed.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly facility fee, incidental card hold and paid off-site parking; bring matching photo ID and credit card.
