Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong neighborhood base, with more character than consistent polish. a lively 4-star boutique hotel on the Upper West Side, scored for what it is.

Arthouse is a lively 4-star boutique hotel on the Upper West Side, and we'd choose it for the neighborhood rather than luxury treatment. Central Park, the Natural History Museum and subway connections are within easy walking distance. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and generally clean rooms. The art-filled lobby, café and evening bar give it personality beyond a standard city hotel.

The trade-offs are uneven room sizes and condition, a mandatory nightly urban fee, and communal spaces that can feel more bar than quiet lounge. Some guests describe worn bathrooms and elevator waits; refrigerators are request-only. Guests reported outside construction noise in May and June 2026, so confirm whether your assigned room is affected. We'd skip it if you need generous space, dependable hush or consistently polished four-star finishes.

• Best for: Upper West Side neighborhood stays; museum and Central Park visitors; couples who enjoy a lively lobby

• Watch out for: Mandatory nightly urban fee; Variable room sizes and upkeep; Lobby music and reported outside construction noise

• Location: Walkable Upper West Side setting near museums, Central Park, restaurants and subway stations.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but space and finishes vary; mini-fridges require a request and depend on availability.

• Cleanliness: Recent reviews are predominantly positive, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a defining pattern.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise, though problem handling is not uniformly strong.

• Amenities: Café, restaurants, lively bar and gym; recent Expedia guests flag aging gym equipment.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory urban fee, incidental card hold and paid off-site parking; confirm the status of reported exterior construction.
