Axel's take: 8.2/10

Roomy Canal Street comfort makes a strong base, but service can be uneven. a historic 4-star hotel with modern rooms and residences on upper Canal Street, scored for what it is.

The Jung is a historic 4-star hotel with modern rooms and residences on upper Canal Street. We'd pick it for generous room sizes, comfortable beds and access to the French Quarter without sleeping amid Bourbon Street's crowds. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests regularly praise the rooms and friendly staff, and the rooftop pool adds appeal. The streetcar stops outside, while the Superdome is within walking distance.

The trade-off is consistency rather than comfort. Recent Tripadvisor reviews describe thin front-desk coverage, missing room supplies and maintenance lapses; Expedia's latest feedback is substantially more positive, though housekeeping isn't always daily. Cleanliness earns strong overall marks, with some exceptions. Valet parking costs extra and guests report waits; the pool is unheated. We'd skip it if seamless four-star service or a French Quarter doorstep matters more than space.

• Best for: couples wanting room to spread out; Superdome and theater visitors; sightseers comfortable using the streetcar

• Watch out for: uneven housekeeping and front-desk coverage; paid valet with reported waits; unheated rooftop pool

• Location: Upper Canal Street, outside the French Quarter; streetcar directly outside and Superdome walkable.

• Rooms: Spacious rooms and comfortable beds draw praise; some recent guests report maintenance and supply gaps.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings and recent praise, tempered by occasional reports of poorly cleaned bathrooms.

• Service: Staff warmth is a strength, but several guests describe understaffed reception and slow responses.

• Amenities: Outdoor rooftop pool, gym, free Wi-Fi, coffee shop and breakfast restaurant; pool is not heated.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking is extra; confirm housekeeping frequency and any early-arrival or late-departure charges.
