Axel's take: 9.0/10

A strong-value Uptown base that gets cleanliness, comfort and friendly service right. a simple, mid-century-style Uptown hotel with extended-stay conveniences, scored for what it is.

The Alder is a simple, mid-century-style Uptown hotel, and we'd rate it a strong pick for travelers who want comfort rather than full-service extras. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Fridges, microwaves and free parking across the street make it particularly practical for longer stays, university visits and appointments at neighboring Ochsner Baptist. Freret Street restaurants are a short walk away, and there's an outdoor pool.

The compromise is location versus sightseeing convenience: this isn't a walk-out-the-door French Quarter base, and the St. Charles streetcar requires a walk. The hotel confirms it doesn't serve breakfast, despite some listings suggesting otherwise, and fitness facilities aren't offered. We'd skip it for an amenity-heavy getaway or nightlife-centered first visit; for a straightforward Uptown stay, it delivers unusually well.

• Best for: university and medical-center visitors; travelers bringing a car; longer Uptown stays

• Watch out for: no breakfast or on-site gym; transport needed for French Quarter sightseeing; pet fee and supervision restrictions

• Location: Beside Ochsner Baptist, near Freret Street dining; less convenient for French Quarter sightseeing.

• Rooms: Guests consistently praise spacious rooms and comfortable beds; fridges and microwaves add practicality.

• Cleanliness: A standout strength across recent guest feedback and Booking.com's category ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive repeated praise across several review sites.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi and complimentary self-parking across the street; no breakfast or gym.

• Fees and surprises: Pets incur a nonrefundable fee and cannot be left unattended; additional adult occupants incur charges.
