Axel's take: 7.9/10

A strong family playground, but less convincing as a polished luxury escape. A sprawling, upscale 4-star beach-and-casino resort at the heart of Atlantis, scored for what it is.

The Royal is an upscale 4-star beach-and-casino resort whose strongest asset is being central to Atlantis. We'd pick it for families who will use Aquaventure, the beaches and marine exhibits every day—not for intimate luxury. The hotel announced refurbished guestrooms in 2024, and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, helpful staff and the convenient location. Waterpark access is included with your stay.

The trade-offs are expensive dining, mandatory resort fees and gratuities, and a sprawling layout. Tripadvisor and Reddit feedback also points to uneven service and lingering wear despite the refurbishment, although recent Expedia reviews are substantially more positive. Check seasonal closures: Atlantis currently lists Grotto Pool closed until November 2, 2026, and Bimini Road until November 6. We'd skip it for a quiet couples' retreat or if predictable, all-inclusive spending matters more than activities.

• Best for: Families with waterpark-loving children; Travelers wanting central access to Atlantis; Beach-and-casino vacations

• Watch out for: Expensive dining and mandatory add-on charges; Uneven service and lingering wear; Seasonal pool and restaurant closures

• Location: Central within Atlantis, close to Aquaventure, The Dig and the casino; the wider resort still involves considerable walking.

• Rooms: Refurbished guestrooms announced in 2024; guests still flag older bathrooms and wear in some areas.

• Cleanliness: Strong recent Expedia feedback overall, despite individual housekeeping complaints elsewhere.

• Service: Recent Expedia guests frequently praise staff; Tripadvisor and Reddit experiences are less consistent.

• Amenities: Waterpark, beaches, pools, marine exhibits, casino, gym and spa; Grotto Pool currently closed.

• Fees and surprises: Not all-inclusive; mandatory resort fees and gratuities apply, with dining and many activities extra.
