Axel's take: 8.1/10

Downtown character and beach access make a strong combination, despite uneven service details. a historic 4-star beachfront hotel in downtown Nassau, scored for what it is.

British Colonial is a historic 4-star beachfront hotel that makes a strong base for exploring Nassau without giving up pool-and-beach downtime. Independently operated rather than a Hilton, it reopened after a major renovation in December 2023. Its grand public spaces, two outdoor pools and walkable Bay Street location are the main draws. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, welcoming staff and the convenience of having downtown attractions nearby.

The trade-offs are less polished: Booking.com and Tripadvisor reviews describe recurring housekeeping replenishment lapses and occasional maintenance problems. The small, harbor-facing beach is convenient rather than secluded, and some loungers attract complaints about wear. Factor in a mandatory resort fee, an incidental deposit and paid parking. We'd choose it for sightseeing mixed with relaxation, but skip it for flawless luxury service or a sweeping resort beach.

• Best for: couples combining sightseeing and beach time; travelers who prefer historic hotels; short downtown Nassau stays

• Watch out for: mandatory resort fee and incidental deposit; inconsistent housekeeping follow-through; small harbor-facing beach

• Location: Walkable Bay Street base near downtown museums, shops and the cruise port.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable; recent guests report occasional maintenance faults and noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness feedback, despite some housekeeping replenishment lapses.

• Service: Staff warmth earns consistent praise; problem resolution is less dependable.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, private beach, gym, restaurants and non-motorized watersports.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory resort fee, incidental deposit and paid parking; no longer Hilton-affiliated.
