Axel's take: 8.8/10

A dependable Chiaia base with traditional character, excellent housekeeping and welcoming staff. a traditional 4-star palazzo hotel in Chiaia, scored for what it is.

Palazzo Alabardieri is a traditional 4-star in Chiaia, and we'd choose it for comfortable city exploring rather than resort-style extras. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and location among restaurants and shops, close to the waterfront. Rooms lean classic rather than contemporary, and breakfast generally earns warm reviews. It's a strong pick if you want a hotel that feels removed from the bustle without being isolated.

The compromises are mostly practical: some guests describe cramped or dated showers, with occasional water-pressure or temperature issues, and several miss in-room tea and coffee facilities. Don't expect a gym, spa or pool, and parking is off-site. We'd skip it if modern bathrooms, extensive leisure facilities or a position right in the old town matter more than Chiaia's dining and shopping.

• Best for: couples on a city break; travelers who prefer traditional hotels; restaurant and shopping-focused stays

• Watch out for: some showers feel dated or cramped; no in-room tea or coffee facilities reported; no pool, gym or spa

• Location: Walkable Chiaia setting near restaurants, shops and the waterfront, rather than in the old-town core.

• Rooms: Classic decor and generally comfortable rooms; some guests flag shower size, condition or water delivery.

• Cleanliness: A standout strength, with consistently strong housekeeping feedback across major sites.

• Service: Friendly, courteous and helpful staff are a recurring highlight in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Breakfast, Amazzone bar, free Wi-Fi and family rooms; the official site lists restaurant service only on request.

• Fees and surprises: City tax is payable at the property; airport transfers cost extra, and there is no on-site parking.
