#6 of 9 hotels in Colaba by Axel's take. Colaba is #2 of 9 places to stay in Mumbai. The best hotels in Colaba, ranked · Where to stay in Mumbai

Axel's take: 7.0/10

Come for Colaba, but check renovation progress before committing. A budget hostel with dorms and private rooms in Colaba, scored for what it is.

Backpacker Cowies is a budget hostel with private rooms, not a conventional 3-star hotel. Its strongest selling point is Colaba: markets, cafes and the Gateway of India are within easy walking distance. Booking.com and Expedia guests often praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and the rooftop common space. We'd consider it for a short, sightseeing-heavy stay rather than a hotel-style retreat.

Consistency is the catch. Reviews vary on bathroom cleanliness, room condition and how staff handle problems; some rooms lack external windows, and dorm bunks lack privacy curtains. More importantly, guests reported lift renovation, dusty corridors and building work between May and July 2026; completion is unverified. Published policies also specify daily air-conditioning shutdowns. Confirm the works, lift access and exact room setup before booking. We'd skip it for dependable daytime comfort or mobility-sensitive stays until those points are settled.

  • Best for: Budget travelers prioritizing Colaba; Short sightseeing stays

  • Watch out for: Lift and building works reported through July 2026; Daily air-conditioning shutdowns; Variable room condition and dorm privacy

  • Location: Excellent sightseeing base near Colaba Causeway and the Gateway of India.

  • Rooms: Dorms and basic private rooms; some lack external windows, and guests mention curtainless bunks.

  • Cleanliness: Many positive reports, but bathroom hygiene and room upkeep draw repeated criticism.

  • Service: Frequently helpful and welcoming, though complaint handling receives sharply mixed feedback.

  • Amenities: Wi-Fi, rooftop/common areas, shared kitchen and laundry; lift availability needs confirmation.

  • Fees and surprises: Cash damage deposit, bring-your-own locker padlock, daily AC-off hours and no alcohol permitted.
