#7 of 9 hotels in Pacific Grove by Axel's take. Pacific Grove is #3 of 6 places to stay in Monterey, California. The best hotels in Pacific Grove, ranked · Where to stay in Monterey, California

Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical coastal base, but current repairs weaken its appeal. A simple, older budget hotel in Pacific Grove, not a full-service resort, scored for what it is.

Monarch is a simple, older budget hotel in Pacific Grove rather than a full-service resort. We'd consider it for a coast-focused trip: Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the location, spacious rooms and helpful staff, with generally positive cleanliness feedback. Free parking adds value, and some rooms have fireplaces. Expect traditional furnishings rather than a fresh boutique finish.

The immediate catch is construction. Expedia lists exterior renovations through October 24, 2026; September and October guests report roofing noise, with pool, spa and balcony closures reported in September. Confirm reopening before booking. Expedia also lists breakfast unavailable November 6, 2026–June 1, 2027, despite the official site's breakfast promise. Worn carpets and uneven room condition recur in feedback. We'd skip it for a pool-centered break or if construction noise would spoil the stay.

Best for: Budget-minded coastal explorers; Road-trippers who value free parking
Watch out for: Roofing noise and recently reported leisure-facility closures; Scheduled breakfast suspension; Dated furnishings and worn carpets
Location: Walkable to Point Pinos Lighthouse, the butterfly sanctuary and the shoreline.
Rooms: Guests appreciate the space; furnishings and carpets show age, and some rooms have fireplaces.
Cleanliness: Mostly positive overall, especially on Expedia, but some recent guests report room-condition lapses.
Service: Helpful staff receive frequent praise, though problem handling is less consistent.
Amenities: Pool, hot tub and sauna are advertised; confirm availability following September closure reports.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free; exterior work is scheduled through October 24, 2026, and breakfast suspension November 6, 2026–June 1, 2027; dates may change.
