Axel's take: 8.1/10

A friendly, good-value base near the beach, provided you can overlook dated rooms. a simple, family-run 3-star near Montego Bay’s Hip Strip, scored for what it is.

Toby’s is a simple, family-run 3-star near the Hip Strip, not a beachfront resort. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want a convenient Montego Bay base without paying for elaborate facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, generally clean rooms and easy access to restaurants and beaches. Two outdoor pools and an on-site restaurant make it useful for more than an airport overnight.

The compromise is room polish: dated furniture crops up across reviews, although many guests still find the beds comfortable and the basics dependable. Doctor’s Cave Beach is a walk away and charges admission; breakfast and airport transfers also cost extra. We’d skip it for a pampered, stay-on-property beach holiday, but recommend it for independent travelers who prioritize location and friendly service.

• Best for: independent travelers watching their budget; airport stopovers; couples exploring Montego Bay

• Watch out for: dated room furnishings; not beachfront; Doctor’s Cave admission costs extra; no elevators

• Location: Near the Hip Strip, within walking distance of beaches and restaurants and a short drive from the airport.

• Rooms: Simple, air-conditioned rooms; deluxe rooms add a mini-fridge and coffee facilities, but furnishings can feel dated.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated across major sites, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a dominant negative pattern.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, restaurant, bars, free Wi-Fi and free parking; no direct beachfront.

• Fees and surprises: Expect a damage deposit and extra charges for breakfast and airport transfers; arrange late arrivals ahead.
