Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong beach base with helpful hosts, but not a full-service four-star. a simple, small boutique hotel near the beach, now called The Fifth Hotel, scored for what it is.

Life House, South of Fifth now operates as The Fifth Hotel by At Mine Hospitality, a simple 26-room boutique rather than the full-service four-star its old listing suggests. It reopened under new management in 2025 after repairs and bathroom upgrades. We'd pick it for the walkable South of Fifth location, a block from the beach, and the consistently praised cleanliness, comfortable bedding and helpful hosts. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor feedback is strongly positive.

The trade-offs are practical: several guests flag sound carrying through doors and walls, upstairs rooms require stairs, and reception has limited hours with code-based check-in. Housekeeping is on request, and parking costs extra at a nearby garage. It's a strong fit for beach-focused couples or groups choosing the bunk-bed rooms; we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting round-the-clock hotel service.

• Best for: beach-focused couples; groups sharing private bunk-bed rooms; travelers exploring South Beach on foot

• Watch out for: sound carrying between rooms and corridors; stairs to upper-floor rooms; limited reception hours and code-based entry

• Location: Walkable South of Fifth setting, one block from the beach and close to restaurants.

• Rooms: Private queen, king and bunk-bed options; comfortable bedding gets praise, soundproofing less so.

• Cleanliness: Recent post-reopening reviews repeatedly praise clean, well-kept rooms.

• Service: Helpful, responsive hosts; limited-hour reception and housekeeping on request.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, shared kitchen facilities and luggage storage; a simple setup.

• Fees and surprises: Now The Fifth Hotel; paid garage parking nearby requires advance arrangement.
