Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical South Beach budget base, with more character than polish. a quirky, no-frills 2-star in South Beach, scored for what it is.

James Hotel is a quirky, no-frills 2-star whose strongest selling point is its South Beach location. The beach, Lincoln Road and convention center are all within walking distance, and complimentary parking adds real value if your car fits the restrictions. We'd consider it for a simple, well-located stay rather than a hotel-centered vacation. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms and the colorful, eccentric decor.

The trade-off is age, not a shortage of personality: rooms and bathrooms are dated, and some recent guests flag tired mattresses, weak water pressure or a slow elevator. Cleanliness ratings are respectable rather than outstanding. Parking is limited, first-come, first-served, and Expedia excludes SUVs and larger vehicles. We'd skip it if modern finishes, consistently plush beds or guaranteed parking matter more than location and budget.

• Best for: budget-minded beach visitors; convention attendees keeping costs down; travelers who enjoy eccentric decor

• Watch out for: dated rooms and bathrooms; variable bed comfort; limited parking with vehicle restrictions

• Location: Walkable South Beach base near the beach, Lincoln Road and convention center.

• Rooms: Simple, dated rooms with microwaves and mini-fridges; some guests report tired mattresses.

• Cleanliness: Recent guests often praise cleaning, though aggregate cleanliness scores are only moderate.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the clearest recurring positives.

• Amenities: Free internet, garden, terrace and laundry facilities; expect basics rather than resort amenities.

• Fees and surprises: Free parking is first-come, one space per room; Expedia excludes SUVs and larger vehicles. Rollaway beds cost extra.
