Axel's take: 8.3/10

Strong on character and location, less convincing on space and quiet. a historic 4-star boutique hotel on lively Española Way, scored for what it is.

Esmé is a historic 4-star boutique hotel arranged village-style around Española Way, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer character to a sprawling beachfront resort. Its colorful interiors, courtyards and rooftop pool give it a distinctive identity. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise the central location, helpful staff and cleanliness; the beach is a short walk away.

The compromises are practical: rooms repeatedly draw complaints for tight layouts, limited storage and dim lighting, while nightlife noise depends on room placement. The rooftop pool is for cooling off, not swimming laps. A mandatory resort fee and separately charged valet parking also deserve attention. We'd choose it for a couples' city-and-beach break, but skip it if spacious rooms, reliable quiet or direct beachfront access are priorities.

• Best for: couples on a South Beach break; design-minded travelers; exploring restaurants and nightlife on foot

• Watch out for: small, dim rooms with limited storage; nightlife noise varies by room; mandatory resort fee and paid valet parking

• Location: On Española Way near restaurants and nightlife; walkable to the beach, but not beachfront.

• Rooms: Distinctive decor and comfortable beds; recurring complaints concern size, lighting and storage.

• Cleanliness: Generally well regarded across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest reviews.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a consistent strength, despite occasional uneven experiences.

• Amenities: Small rooftop pool and bar, 24-hour gym, bikes and beach-chair access.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly resort fee, incidental deposit and paid valet; breakfast is included only in selected plans.
