Axel's take: 8.3/10

Choose it for Manila history, generous rooms and breakfast, not cutting-edge luxury. a historic five-star hotel beside Rizal Park, scored for what it is.

The Manila Hotel is a historic five-star beside Rizal Park, and a strong pick if exploring old Manila matters more than contemporary design. Its grand lobby and proximity to Intramuros give it genuine character. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise spacious rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and the extensive breakfast buffet. The pool, spa and health club round out a proper full-service stay.

The trade-off is polish: several Tripadvisor guests describe aging décor and maintenance needs, while service attracts both enthusiastic praise and complaints about inattentiveness. Busy events can also mean breakfast queues and parking delays. We'd choose it for heritage and sightseeing, but skip it if you expect uniformly modern rooms or seamless luxury service. Check whether breakfast is included rather than assuming it comes with every booking.

• Best for: heritage-hotel enthusiasts; Intramuros and Rizal Park sightseeing; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: aging room décor and uneven maintenance; breakfast queues during busy periods; event-related parking delays

• Location: Well placed for Rizal Park and Intramuros; less convenient for wider Metro Manila outings.

• Rooms: Spacious and comfortable, but recurring reviews describe dated décor and maintenance needs.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, despite the building's age.

• Service: Usually warmly praised, though some guests report inattentive restaurant service and uneven problem handling.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, spa, gym, sauna and several dining venues, including Café Ilang-Ilang.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking is free but can fill during events; breakfast inclusion varies, and late checkout can cost extra.
