Axel's take: 8.1/10

Pick it for the architecture and helpful staff, not effortless five-star luxury. a design-led five-star outside Madrid’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Puerta América is a design-led five-star outside Madrid’s historic center, with dramatically different interiors on each floor. It’s a strong pick for architecture fans who want something less conventional. Recent Hotels.com and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms; Booking.com’s overall feedback supports those strengths. Cartagena metro is nearby, making the less-central address manageable.

The catch is that striking design doesn’t always make an easy room: guests across sites mention confusing lighting controls, awkward layouts and missing tea-and-coffee facilities. Those shortcomings matter at five-star level. There’s a gym and seasonal outdoor pool, but the pool is closed for the season in October. We’d choose it for a design-focused or business stay, and skip it if walk-everywhere sightseeing or consistently practical luxury matters more.

• Best for: architecture and design enthusiasts; business travelers; couples comfortable using the metro

• Watch out for: outside the main sightseeing core; room layouts and controls can be impractical; outdoor pool closed for the season

• Location: Near Cartagena metro; expect transport rather than walking to the historic center.

• Rooms: Distinctive floor-by-floor designs and comfortable beds, but recurring complaints about controls and practicality.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Hotels.com and Trip.com feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff attract repeated praise, including for resolving problems.

• Amenities: Gym, restaurants, upper-floor bar and seasonal outdoor pool; check bar availability before planning around it.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and breakfast cost extra unless included; pool dates differ between listings, so confirm for your stay.
