Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong central Madrid base with standout staff, but rooftop nightlife can disturb sleep. a stylish five-star city hotel just off Gran Vía, scored for what it is.

NH Collection Madrid Suecia is a stylish five-star city hotel just off Gran Vía, and we'd choose it for sightseeing with a lively evening scene. Recent Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and central location; comfortable rooms, breakfast and rooftop views also earn strong feedback. It's particularly appealing if you want museums, shopping and restaurants within easy walking distance rather than a hotel that becomes the destination itself.

The main compromise is quiet. Guests on more than one site report late-night rooftop or event noise, although plenty describe peaceful stays. Request a room away from entertainment areas rather than assuming a high floor will be quieter. Entry-level rooms are relatively compact, and there's no pool. We'd skip it if uninterrupted sleep or extensive five-star leisure facilities matter more than location and atmosphere.

• Best for: couples on a sightseeing break; museum and shopping trips; travelers who enjoy rooftop bars

• Watch out for: late-night rooftop and event noise; compact entry-level rooms; no swimming pool

• Location: Excellent central base beside Círculo de Bellas Artes, close to Gran Vía and the art museums.

• Rooms: Comfortable contemporary rooms; Superior rooms start around 20 square meters, and noise varies by position.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive recent feedback, without a consistent cross-site pattern of housekeeping problems.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent strengths across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Rooftop terrace, Casa Suecia restaurant, cocktail bars and a fitness room; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Check whether breakfast is included; off-site parking and pets cost extra, and parking requires availability and reservation.
