Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong central Madrid base, with standout breakfast rather than grand-hotel luxury. a contemporary five-star city hotel on busy Gran Vía, scored for what it is.

Hyatt Centric Gran Vía Madrid is a contemporary five-star city hotel, and we'd choose it for exploring Madrid rather than retreating from it. Shops, restaurants and metro stations are close by. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable rooms and breakfast; Booking.com's strong cleanliness and comfort scores reinforce that picture. El Jardín de Diana adds rooftop drinks and city views to an already appealing sightseeing base.

The trade-off is atmosphere: this is bustling Gran Vía, not a secluded luxury address. Many guests find the soundproofing effective, though some rooftop-adjacent rooms pick up music. A recent guest also reported rooftop access lost to private events, so confirm availability if that's central to your plans. We'd skip it if hushed surroundings and a grand five-star sense of occasion matter more than location.

• Best for: first-time Madrid sightseers; shopping and theatre breaks; couples who enjoy rooftop drinks

• Watch out for: busy Gran Vía surroundings; possible music near the rooftop; confirm rooftop access around private events

• Location: Central Gran Vía address, with shopping, dining and metro stations nearby.

• Rooms: Contemporary, comfortable rooms; soundproofing earns praise, but rooftop proximity can matter.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness feedback across Booking.com and recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Rooftop bar, on-site dining, fitness center and free Wi-Fi; breakfast is particularly well reviewed.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra unless included; pet stays and late checkout can incur charges.
