Axel's take: 8.5/10

A dependable Madrid base with strong cleanliness and transport links, but some compact rooms. a comfortable mid-range city hotel beside Argüelles metro, scored for what it is.

Hotel Indigo Madrid–Princesa is a mid-range city hotel rather than a luxury boutique escape, and it's a strong pick for exploring Madrid without staying directly on Gran Vía. Argüelles metro is practically outside, with shopping and restaurants nearby. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com's strong cleanliness and comfort scores reinforce that picture.

The compromises are mostly space and atmosphere. Several guests find standard bedrooms compact, and noise crops up in reviews, so light sleepers should request a quieter room. Breakfast earns plenty of praise, but opinions on its variety and the attached restaurant are less consistent. There's a gym but no pool, and parking is limited and charged separately. We'd choose it for a practical city break, not a facilities-heavy stay or guaranteed spaciousness.

• Best for: couples on city breaks; travelers using the metro; visitors to Moncloa and Argüelles

• Watch out for: some compact standard rooms; occasional noise complaints; limited paid parking

• Location: Beside Argüelles metro, with shops and restaurants nearby and Plaza de España within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and well-liked showers; standard bedrooms can feel compact, and sound insulation gets some criticism.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia, Booking.com and Trip.com.

• Service: Recent reviews overwhelmingly praise helpful reception staff; restaurant service receives more mixed feedback.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, a gym and a restaurant/bar; the hotel confirms there is no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; IHG lists only eight paid parking spaces and advises reserving ahead.
