Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong sightseeing base with historic character, spotless rooms and notably helpful staff. A historic 4-star city hotel in central Madrid, scored for what it is.

Catalonia Puerta del Sol is a historic 4-star that gets the city-break essentials right. Its eighteenth-century entrance, staircase and courtyard give it character, while Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor are an easy walk away. We'd choose it for exploring Madrid on foot: recent Expedia, Trip.com and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the welcoming staff, cleanliness and comfortable rooms. Breakfast also earns repeated compliments for variety and cooked-to-order eggs.

Room choice matters more than the handsome lobby suggests. Some doubles are compact, and courtyard-facing rooms can lack daylight; the hotel identifies Premium rooms and suites as renovated options. An October 2026 Expedia guest also reports construction nearby, so check the current situation before booking. It's a strong pick for sightseeing couples and first-time visitors, but we'd look elsewhere if spacious rooms and uniformly contemporary interiors are priorities.

• Best for: First-time Madrid visitors; Couples on a sightseeing break; Travelers exploring on foot

• Watch out for: Some compact, inward-facing rooms; Room style varies by category; Nearby construction reported in October 2026

• Location: Central Atocha Street address, with Sol, Plaza Mayor, restaurants and metro stops nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable overall; check size and outlook, with explicitly renovated Premium rooms and suites available.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff receive unusually consistent praise across sites.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, gastrobar, free Wi-Fi and a gym listed by Expedia.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; parking is in a paid public garage nearby, and pets incur a supplement and deposit.
