Axel's take: 9.1/10

An excellent sightseeing base that gets comfort, cleanliness and service right. A comfortable 4-star city hotel in Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras, scored for what it is.

Catalonia Plaza Mayor is a comfortable 4-star in a historic building on Calle Atocha, not on Plaza Mayor itself. It’s a strong pick for exploring Madrid on foot, with the square, Sol and major museums within easy reach. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff; recent reviews also repeatedly commend breakfast. We’d choose it for dependable comfort and service rather than showpiece luxury.

The main caveats are practical rather than recurring failings. Parking is in the adjoining building, costs extra and needs reserving. Don’t mistake the private pools attached to Premium Terrace rooms for a shared swimming pool: the general wellness facilities are a jacuzzi and gym. We’d skip it if a communal pool or a hotel directly overlooking Plaza Mayor is essential.

• Best for: First-time Madrid visitors; Couples on sightseeing breaks; Travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: Not directly on Plaza Mayor; Private pools require the specific room category; Paid parking requires advance reservation

• Location: Central Barrio de las Letras setting, under ten minutes’ walk from Plaza Mayor and close to Antón Martín metro.

• Rooms: Standard doubles are listed at 23 square meters; guests frequently praise comfortable beds and well-kept rooms.

• Cleanliness: A standout strength, supported by strong category ratings and repeated recent guest praise.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn consistent praise across Booking.com and Expedia.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, gastrobar terrace, gym and jacuzzi; selected Premium Terrace rooms have private heated pools.

• Fees and surprises: Parking next door is charged and must be reserved; pets require approval, a supplement and a deposit.
