Axel's take: 8.7/10

A dependable Salamanca base with excellent service and a jazz-bar bonus. a small, upscale 4-star in Madrid’s Salamanca district, scored for what it is.

AC Hotel Recoletos is a small, upscale 4-star that makes a strong base for exploring Madrid on foot. Its neoclassical building sits near Puerta de Alcalá, Retiro Park and Serrano shopping, with useful rail and metro connections nearby. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and comfortable rooms. The library and jazz bar give it more personality than a straightforward business hotel.

The trade-off is limited leisure space: guests describe the gym as tiny and lightly equipped. A few also report early-morning street noise or music reaching lower-floor rooms, so light sleepers should request a quieter room away from the bar. Breakfast and parking can cost extra. We'd choose it for location and attentive service, but skip it if substantial fitness facilities or guaranteed silence are priorities.

• Best for: couples exploring Madrid; Salamanca shopping and dining; travelers who enjoy live jazz

• Watch out for: occasional street and bar noise; tiny, lightly equipped gym; breakfast and parking extras

• Location: Near Retiro Park, Puerta de Alcalá and Serrano shops, with rail and metro nearby.

• Rooms: Guests generally find rooms comfortable and spacious; quieter room placement matters for light sleepers.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in guest feedback, with particularly strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Helpful, attentive staff receive repeated praise across Booking.com and Expedia.

• Amenities: Library, lounge, jazz bar and a small gym; better for city breaks than extensive on-site recreation.

• Fees and surprises: On-site parking is charged; check whether breakfast is included in your booking.
