Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong business base with welcoming staff, spacious rooms and a well-liked breakfast. a traditional upscale business hotel on Madinah Road, scored for what it is.

Mövenpick City Star is a traditional upscale business hotel, strongest for airport access, exhibition visits and comfortable short stays. We'd pick it for spacious rooms and consistently warm hospitality rather than cutting-edge design. Booking.com guests praise cleanliness and helpful reception staff, while recent Tripadvisor and Accor reviews repeatedly single out the restaurant team and breakfast. The rooftop pool and free parking round out a practical city stay.

The trade-offs are mostly about fit: the ornate interiors won't suit minimalist tastes, and this is a Madinah Road base rather than a waterfront escape. Expedia lists limited pool hours, so confirm those before planning afternoons around swimming. We'd skip it for a beach-focused holiday, but it's a strong choice for business trips or a comfortable airport stopover.

• Best for: Business and exhibition visitors; Comfortable airport stopovers; Travelers who prioritize spacious rooms

• Watch out for: Traditional rather than contemporary interiors; Not a waterfront location; Confirm pool opening hours

• Location: Convenient for the airport and exhibition centre; the Corniche requires a separate trip.

• Rooms: Spacious, comfortable rooms with classic decor; the hotel advertises soundproof windows.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Accor reviews.

• Service: Welcoming reception and attentive restaurant staff are recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Rooftop outdoor pool, spa, gym and popular breakfast; confirm pool hours.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; airport transfers cost extra, and four- versus five-star listings differ.
