Axel's take: 8.4/10

Refreshed rooms and thoughtful service impress, but ongoing renovations compromise the grand-hotel experience. a historic luxury château hotel overlooking Edmonton’s river valley, scored for what it is.

Fairmont Hotel Macdonald is a historic luxury château above Edmonton’s river valley, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer character to a modern tower. Fairmont says its guest rooms were renovated in 2024; recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Accor guests praise comfortable rooms, cleanliness and genuinely attentive staff. We'd choose a river-view room to make the most of the setting. The indoor saltwater pool and substantial health club add substance beyond the architecture.

The main reservation is current construction: Fairmont still lists lobby-level renovations and the Harvest Room restaurant as closed, with meals served in Confederation Lounge instead. Guests also report temporary elevator limitations and awkward routes through the building. Parking costs extra. We'd skip it for a special occasion requiring a fully polished arrival until the hotel confirms the work is finished.

• Best for: Travelers who appreciate historic hotels; Couples booking river-view rooms; Downtown stays with pool time

• Watch out for: Ongoing lobby-level renovations; Harvest Room temporarily closed; Elevator limitations during construction

• Location: Central downtown setting above the river valley; river-view rooms make the location count.

• Rooms: Guest rooms refreshed in 2024, with comfortable beds and retained historic details.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, including praise for pool-area upkeep.

• Service: Warm, accommodating staff earn repeated praise, particularly on the Fairmont Gold floors.

• Amenities: Indoor saltwater pool, whirlpool, gym, sauna and steam room; Gold bookings include lounge benefits.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking and valet cost extra; lobby work changes access, and Harvest Room remains listed as closed.
