#3 of 7 hotels in Southside & Newington by Axel's take. Southside & Newington is #6 of 7 places to stay in Edinburgh. The best hotels in Southside & Newington, ranked · Where to stay in Edinburgh

Axel's take: 8.7/10

A comfortable campus base with excellent breakfast, but not a city-centre doorstep. a university-owned 4-star hotel on Edinburgh’s leafy Pollock Estate, scored for what it is.

The Scholar is a university-owned 4-star on the leafy Pollock Estate, beside Holyrood Park. It’s a strong pick if you prefer green surroundings to Old Town bustle: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff and generous breakfasts. The refreshed reception and Abacus restaurant give the public spaces an updated feel; the restaurant reopened in January 2026.

The trade-off is a roughly 20–30-minute walk into the centre, with buses nearby. Some rooms are compact, and recent guests on both sites mention warm bedrooms and noise when windows are open; Expedia guests flag the lack of air-conditioning. Free parking is useful but limited, not guaranteed. We’d choose it for park walks, university visits and comfortable sightseeing stays, but skip it if you need dependable cooling or nightlife immediately outside.

  • Best for: Holyrood Park walkers; university and conference visitors; sightseers happy to walk or take buses

  • Watch out for: No air-conditioning; open-window noise; Some compact bedrooms; Limited first-come parking

  • Location: Leafy university estate beside Holyrood Park; allow roughly 20–30 minutes to walk into the centre.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds, coffee machines and rainfall showers; some rooms are compact and can feel warm.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent reviews, with particularly strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise welcoming, helpful reception and breakfast staff.

  • Amenities: Abacus restaurant and bar; complimentary off-site Pleasance gym access, while the neighbouring public pool charges admission.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is free but limited; EV charging and dogs cost extra. Cashless; confirm visitor-levy treatment with third-party bookings.
