Axel's take: 9.1/10

A strong Dublin boutique pick for personal service, excellent breakfasts and quieter nights. a stylish 4-star Victorian townhouse hotel near St. Stephen’s Green, scored for what it is.

The Wilder is a 42-room, 4-star Victorian townhouse that suits travelers who prefer character and personal attention to big-hotel bustle. We'd put it high on the shortlist for a quieter Dublin break: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, spotless interiors and excellent breakfasts. The residential setting feels removed from the busiest streets without making central sightseeing difficult, and the intimate gin bar and garden terrace give it somewhere inviting to unwind.

The main compromise is space. Shoebox rooms measure just 12 square metres, and guests across sites mention limited luggage space in smaller categories; we'd choose a larger room for two people staying several nights. Check whether breakfast is included, and don't count on securing one of the limited parking spaces. Skip it if you want a full-service dinner restaurant or nightlife immediately outside.

• Best for: couples seeking a quieter city break; boutique-hotel lovers; solo travelers packing light

• Watch out for: tight luggage space in smaller rooms; limited first-come parking; light bites rather than full dinner service

• Location: Quiet residential setting within walking distance of St. Stephen’s Green and central sights.

• Rooms: Individually decorated; Shoebox rooms are 12 square metres, with substantially larger options available.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback for clean bedrooms, bathrooms and public spaces.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring highlight across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com.

• Amenities: Cooked breakfasts, gin bar, garden terrace and light bites; not a full-service dinner restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies; parking cannot be reserved; a credit-card preauthorization covers the stay and incidentals.
